Mississippi Aquarium: Sea Camp Adventure

An Amazing Experience At Ocean Springs

I was able to bring my students last May on a Sea Camp Event at J.L. Scott Aquarium. There were so many of them so I decided to divide them in groups so that they can take part in different activities in the camp.

For my students who were between 6-13 yrs old, they were given hands-on activities and live animal encounters. They were able to meet up-close and personal different sea-creatures. Also, they were able to touch and feed some of these animals. The trip also took them to beaches and saltmarsh habitats.

Another batch of my students were between 8-13 were taken to the Deer Island aboard the R/V Sea Explorer. They were also taken to the Ship Island which really was a great island. They were asked to tour around the island and witness some of the aviaries and cages of the animals the aquarium was taking care of.

The last activity that only some of my students were able to participate in was the kayaking. Only the age between 12-13 were allowed with this activity. The participants went through the maritime forest of Bayou Heron and they also explored the Indian middens and salt pannes at Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Moss Point.

The Sea Camp was a really good experience for my students. They were able to learn and explore lots of things while enjoying their field trip. As I read their reflection papers, I found out that they had a new and wonderful experience through that educational trip. I was really overwhelmed that I was able to give them a memorable event in their life.

J.L. Scott Aquarium Is A Place For Wonders

I really had a magnificent time in holding that field trip for my students. In spite of the difficulties that I have encountered before we got there, it was all washed off by the smiles that my students had that time.

If you want to experience the same wonderful escapade that we've encountered there, then I highly recommend that you visit J.L. Scott Aquarium in Ocean Springs. It would be a great opportunity to students and even teachers to explore and learn more about our marine environment. But don’t forget to grab some Mississippi aquarium coupons to get some discounts when you visit the place.

Mississippi Aquarium: Overnight Adventures at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium

Nighttime Fun at the Mississippi Aquarium!

Ever wonder what it would feel like to sleep aboard an old boat? Curious about how seamen live? Ever thought about sneaking into an aquarium after hours to see what happens when no one’s there? Well, at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, you can do all that!

As a teacher, I like to keep my lessons interesting for the kids I teach. Kids tend to feel a little cooped up in classrooms sometimes and I believe in learning through experience. So, recently, I decided to take my students out on a field trip. However, because of the recession, I was determined to look for group packages or discounts, so as not to burden the children’s parents. That was when I stumbled upon the overnight programs given by the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium.

Amazing Overnight Group Packages at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium

I chose the William M. Black Boat and Breakfast program for my students. We were studying about the early 1900’s and I wanted them to get a “feel” of how it was to live during that time. I let them pick lots on who got to stay in the state rooms and the crew’s quarters. Needless to say, we had a blast. We spent the evening talking about history and telling each other stories about the young Republic. I had also assigned them to prepare short skits on certain historical events and had them perform it out on the deck. We also learned about how a steam boat runs – with the help of the aquarium staff of course.

If you’re not too keen on the steamboat experience, there’s also the Mighty Mississippi Overnight Adventure. This program already include games, activities and even movies.

A Day With The Kids In The JL Scott Aquarium

Learning About The Largemouth Bass And So Much More

Last school year, one of the most fun days of the year was the one I spent bringing my students on a day trip to the JL Scott Aquarium. I purchased tickets for me and all my students online and got a special discount because it was an educational activity and because we were reserving as a large group.

We arrived in the aquarium right before opening time, so we could make the most out of our day there. There were a few guides waiting for us. They would be the ones to introduce the kids to the various species of marine life that they would see inside the aquarium that day. The guides were very knowledgeable and child-friendly, so the kids were able to learn a lot.

There was so much to see inside the aquarium including the famous state fish of Mississippi— the Largemouth Bass. The kids learned a lot about this fish, including where it lives, what it eats each day, how to distinguish this fish from other similar looking ones, and so much more. It was really a wonderful learning experience for the kids.

How The JL Scott Aquarium In Mississippi Changes Lives

Aside from learning about marine life, the kids were also introduced to the concept of environmental protection. They learned about how important it is that they play their part in protecting the environment, specifically the rivers and seas, by doing small things such as throwing their trash in the proper place.

I was glad to see that one of my students seemed especially interested in what the guides were telling her. She was very curious about all the different things she was learning about and kept on asking questions all day. Perhaps she will end up becoming a marine biologist or go into some similar field when she grows up. I am really hoping she does.

If you are looking for an aquarium in Mississippi that your kids will surely enjoy visiting then you should bring them to the J.L. Scott Aquarium. Discounts are available when you use coupons for Mississippi Aquariums. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at mississippiaquariums@gmail.com.

Since this camp is organized and handled by professionals from the J.L Scott Aquarium Marine Education Center, you can rest assured that your children will be learning from some of the very best marine biologists in America.

This camp is held annually during the summer. Children who are between grades four to twelve are welcome to apply. There can be as little as twenty and as much as seventy-five children in each camp, but there are usually more of them than less. This is why parents usually reserve slots for their children way before the start of summer.

The camp lasts for two days and there is a fixed itinerary for both these days. A large staff of teachers and adult volunteers will be there to ensure that your children have a safe and fun learning experience. Fees for food, lodging, and all the materials that will be used during the camp will be included in the fee.

They will also be able to take a boat ride to Ship Island (one of the many Barrier Islands). Here, they will be able to walk on the seashore to collect shells and identify fossils. They will also be given a tour of Fort Massachusetts, so they can get a better appreciation of their rich American history. There are many more activities which your children will enjoy.

Why Kids Love The J.L. Scott Aquarium In Mississippi

Have Fun In Mississippi Aquarium Coastal Science Camps

As a grade school teacher and lover of sea creatures one of the things I like doing most is bringing my students to the J.L. Scott Aquarium in Mississippi. This aquarium may be small in comparison to the more well-funded aquariums in America, but the kids really love looking at the fishes and other sea animals found in the 40+ fish tanks that comprise the aquarium.

Every September to October the Mississippi aquarium offers Coastal Science Camps to children in grades 4-12. These camps can be comprised of 20 up to 75 students. There are only two batches for the camp each year, so I always make sure to make reservations for my children a few months before the actual camp.

The camp is handled by trained specialists in the fields of maritime science, marine biology, marine botany, and so much more. They will engage the children in various laboratory and hand-on activities that will enable them to learn more about marine life and why they should help protect it from damage and possible extinction

Your Kid Should Not Miss The Beach And Barrier Island Camp

It is good to establish in children a love for Mother Nature and a responsibility towards the environment early on, so that they can carry on these values when they grow older. This is the main reason why I bring my students of field trips to the J.L Scott Aquarium each year. Through the years, I have realized that kids like the Beach and Barrier Island Camp the best.

This is a 2-day camp in which the kids will be able to explore marshes, ride on a ship, walk along beaches all while learning more about sea life. Don’t worry as there are always plenty of safety marshals aside from the instructors that will be accompanying your kids. All meals will be included in your payment for the camp.

Speaking of payment, there is a way by which you can get discounts for admission into the aquarium as well as for the camps. By using Mississippi Aquarium coupons, you can save a lot on aquarium expenses. If you have any questions, email me at mississippiaquariums@gmail.com.
